SOS Children’s Villages Malawi is a non-governmental child development organization which started its operations in Malawi in 1994. We envision every child belonging to a family and growing with love, respect and security. We achieve this through building families for children in need, help them shape their own futures and share in the development of their communities.

Through our Child Development Programme we support children who have lost parental care and those at risk of losing parental care to develop within a caring family environment to their full potential as contributing members of their respective societies. We are currently operating 4 SOS Children’s Villages Programmes in Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Ngabu. We achieve our goal through programme units /facilities that include SOS Family Care.

It is in this context that we invite applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Social Worker at our Ngabu Programme.

Position: Social Worker

The Social Worker is responsible for ensuring that the procedures for child placement, child and youth care and reintegration are properly followed. The Social Worker provides advice, guidance and support to SOS Parents and works closely with them to plan appropriate programmes for the development of each child and young person. S/he reports to the Alternative Care Coordinator.

Key responsibilities include:

  •  Ensures that internal Child placement, Child and Youth Care and Reintegration guidelines and policies are followed
  •  Ensures that Government of Malawi’s Child placement, Child and Youth Care and Reintegration guidelines and policies are followed
  •  Ensures that the basic needs of each child and young person are addressed within the family environment
  •  Develops an appropriate plan of action with the child’s or youth’s SOS parents, Alternative Care Coordinator and respective District Social Welfare Offices to meet the needs of the child/young person; and to guide the child/young person to become a well-balanced individual.
  •  Provides children and young people with individual counseling, makes appropriate referrals whenever necessary.
  •  Provides advice, guidance and support with regard to care and parenting experiences of SOS parents
  •  Promotes in-service training of the SOS parents. Participates in and assist with the development of training programmes wherever appropriate.
  •  Provides advice, guidance and support to the other members of the Child development team, in matters relating to parents and children.
  •  Liaises with the relevant Social Welfare Department in carrying out referral, placement, care, leaving care and post care interventions.
  • Supports in producing programme unit monitoring reports; including supporting sponsorship reports and materials/content.

The suitable candidate should possess the following qualifications and skills:

  •  Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or related field
  •  Minimum of 4 years’ experience in social work
  •  Demonstrable understanding of UNCRC, UN Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children; Child Care Protection and Justice Act; and domestic child related laws and policies
  •  Hands on Counseling Skills
  •  Facilitation and presentation skills
  • Ability to relate to and communicate with young people and children.
