    Job Description

    WorldFish delivers a research program in Malawi that spans across capture fisheries, aquaculture and value chains towards environmental sustainability and food and nutrition security objectives. This Scientist position is critical to the design and delivery of research for development for Malawi, and as a contribution to broader programs led by WorldFish. The role will require strong research vision and delivery i.e., effective and efficient design, resourcing and delivery of research projects as agreed with the Country Director and Research Leaders. The position will also require strong management skills in the oversight and supervision of the operations of WorldFish in Malawi – built on strong and effective partnerships national and regionally, and in a way that contributes to the advancement of WorldFish Mission and Vision and global strategy and participate in global leadership forums.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

    Research Delivery

    • Lead the development and implementation of Malawi program of work that is in line with WorldFish’ s Global Strategy and the national and regional priorities, with the end result of enhanced sustainability and food and nutrition security outcomes from fisheries in Malawi.
    • Mobilize resources and effective management of project resources aimed at improving the contribution of fisheries sector to socio-economic development and attainment of sustainable development goals (SDGs) within the context of the changing environment.
    • Lead and contribute to peer-reviewed scientific journal publications, as well as associated policy briefings. Build a highly effective research team to deliver on project outcomes and impacts in line with agreed financing agreements and WorldFish standards.
    • Collaborate as co-author and expert advisor with other WorldFish and partner researchers examining trends in value chains, fish consumption and food and nutrition to generate novel and applied research insights.
    • Maintain strong inter-disciplinary research collaboration with other WorldFish scientists to support implementation of WorldFish research priority projects in Malawi.
    • Provide excellent leadership and partnership skills to draw in associated disciplines to complement the disciplines employed within the Malawi office – networks should extend nationally, institutionally and internationally.

    Project Management

    • Coordinate the design and implementation of research projects in line with WorldFish project management cycle.
    • Facilitate collaboration across research and other organizational teams to promote synergy that will catalyze attainment of WorldFish Mission and Vision.
    • Provide leadership and advice to ensure project and research monitoring and evaluation according to standards and systems used by WorldFish and partners, e.g., MEL, Dashboard etc.
    • Contribute towards annual and multi-year planning in Malawi, and integrate this with regional and institutional-level planning processes to ensure delivery of global and national research programs, country priorities and WorldFish strategy and program goals.
    • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of project and program technical reports in line with donor requirements and WorldFish standards.
    • Work closely with partner organizations and other stakeholders to advance the mission and vision of WorldFish and facilitate program and project delivery.

    Resource Mobilization and Partnerships

    • Facilitate scoping of funding opportunities and creation of strong donor networks in Malawi.
    • Inspire and motivate public and private donors and influence their funding to support fish-based agri-food systems.
    • Lead, and regularly contribute to, the development of funding proposals from concept note to completion in line with donor requirements and consistent with WorldFish standards and research strategy.
    • Facilitate the creation and nurturing of highly effective and strategic relationships with diverse stakeholders in Malawi and the region to enhance their programming and financing to support WorldFish research investment priorities in agri-food systems.

    Marketing and Communications and Advocacy

    • Facilitate the raising of the profile and brand of WorldFish with public and non-public actors and donor community.
    • Facilitate dissemination of results, learnings and impacts arising from WorldFish investments are disseminated to a broad constituency of stakeholders.
    • Ensure that all assets, communication materials and strategies are branded in line with donor requirements and WorldFish standards.

    Policy Advocacy

    • Facilitate initiatives, in collaboration with WorldFish Partners, aimed at improving the policy and regulatory conditions to stimulate growth of fish-based agri-food systems for the benefit of the people of Malawi and the rest of southern Africa.
    • Facilitate generation and dissemination of evidence-based policy briefs and legislative papers that advance growth of fish agri-food systems and represent WorldFish in national and international policy platforms.

    Administration

    • Ensure effective and efficient staffing, financial management and budgeting, training and resourcing for the program in line with WorldFish Standard Operating Policies and Procedures (SoPs).
    • Oversee the management and mitigation of the center’s risks in Malawi. This includes risks related to compliance, ethical breach, administration, operation, financial resources and safety and security.
    • Ensure and facilitate staff and asset safety and security in line with WorldFish Standards.

    Requirements

    This job might be for you if you have the following skills and experience:

    • A PhD in Economics, Marine Ecology/ Fisheries Science OR equivalent experience in related science field.
    • At least 10 years working experience , with at least 3 years in senior research positions.
    • Multi-disciplinary research experience in relevant field(s) (i.e., food systems, livelihoods, climate change, supply chains in inland and/or coastal small-scale fisheries systems).
    • Strong research design, implementation and reporting skills supported with a good peer-reviewed publications track record, and competency with quantitative and/or qualitative research analytical tools, methodologies and analyses.
    • A current understanding of global and regional policies, fisheries development and food security challenges – and an ability to articulate and clear and compelling vision for the role of research in addressing those challenges.
    • Demonstrated ability to collate, manage, analyse and report on large multi-source data sets.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in multi-cultural, interdisciplinary teams as well as develop close and effective working relationships with a range of partners.
    • Strong professional network with researchers in relevant research area, and excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
    • Proven project management and leadership skills, and the ability to provide technical guidance and leadership to teams on scientific matters.
    • Strong communication ability – speaks and writes clearly and effectively and, has good listening ability and body language and able to interpret messages correctly.
    • Ability and willingness to lead and carry out field work in developing countries with a commitment to research for development outcomes.

    Our Offer

    The position will be based in Lilongwe, Malawi. Interviews are expected to be held in October 2020 and only shortlisted candidate will be notified and expected to attend the interview. The successful candidate should be available to commence as soon as possible for an initial of one (1) year fixed term contract, with the possibility of contract renewal depending on performance and funding situation.
