    Job Description

    The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Malawi, is seeking two qualified candidates to serve as Research Analysts. They will be attached to IFPRI’s Malawi Strategy Support Program based in Lilongwe. Initial contracts will be for a period of one year.

    Essential Duties

    These are primarily research positions, requiring a good understanding of agriculture and rural development, experience with quantitative methods including data collection, management of large datasets, and econometric analysis. One position will provide analytical support to IFPRI Malawi’s research theme on Strengthening Agricultural Markets and Institutions, while the other will provide analytical support to its themes on Priorities for Agricultural Investment and Social Safety Nets. They will also provide analytical support to other IFPRI research activities in Malawi as required.

    Required Qualifications and Skills

    • Master’s degree in Agricultural or Development Economics, or a related field
    • 1-2 years’ work experience or demonstrated excellence in research.
    • Demonstrated capacity to analyze and utilize policy- relevant information from a broad range of sources on agricultural production and marketing, and household (i.e. farmers) welfare.
    • Experience using statistical packages such as Stata, GAMS, eViews and Excel.
    • Familiarity with the large household datasets available in Malawi such as the DHS and IHS/IHPS.
    • Familiarity with theoretical and technical issues related to agriculture, economic development, poverty, food security, and/or nutrition in Malawi.

    Both positions will be recruited under the IITA national staff category on Pay Grade 8.
