Job Description

The Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome (MLW) Programme (http://www.mlw.mw) is an internationally recognised centre for research and research training, funded by the Wellcome Trust. In collaboration with the University of Malawi, College of Medicine (COM), MLW would like to engage the services of a competent and dynamic individual to work in exciting Research Programme (Public Health Group) at the MLW Research facility as it is expanding.


Position: Project Manager – 1 post, based in Blantyre (
initial 1 year contract with the possibility of renewal)

Job Summary:

This important role will support the Public Health Research Group at MLW

This role will include project management for 2 exciting new projects (the LIGHT Consortium, a multicounty study investigating interventions to improve tuberculosis diagnosis; and the ePAL2 Study, which is a translation project, aiming to modernise and scale-up an existing electronic tuberculosis surveillance application system).Additionally, the Programme Manager will include helping the group Principal Investigator to maintain oversight of the projects and activities, including budgetary and reporting requirements. The individual will also work strategically to build the research portfolio including assisting with funding applications and will maintain strong links with external partners. They will support group meetings and external visitors.

This role will require a highly motivated and hardworking individual, who is eager to make a difference to public health through high quality research. They will need to be an experienced project manager, highly organized, with strong writing, budget management skills, and data analysis skills, and excellent at working in multi-professional teams.
 

Key Responsibilities

Spending the majority of his/ her time at MLW and in the field, the post-holder will:

  • Supporting the Principal Investigator in the organisation and management of the Public Health Group
  • Planning and leading the implementation of projects within Public Health Group in consultation with the Principal Investigators, Post-Docs, and relevant stakeholders.
  • Leading delivery of the LIGHT Consortium and ePAL2 projects, taking responsibility for project progression, oversight, and coordination with external and overseas partners and funders.
  • Supervising and managing clinical, data, field and community project staff within the public health group
  • Supporting the achievement of high research standards of good clinical practice, particularly in the timely and accurate documentation of research data. Maintain quality and comply with the project quality assurance programme
  • Facilitating communication between the research group and external stakeholders including funders, ministry of health, the clinical departments and others. This will require participating and contributing to international teleconferences when required and visiting research sites and external partners

Qualification, knowledge, skills and experience

  • Master’s Degree in Science or health-related field
  • 2 years’ work experience in research project management.
  • Good IT skills including data entry, word-processing and excel spreadsheets essential.
  • 2 or more years’ experience in a team management or supervisory position.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and lead complex projects.
  • Previous health research experience.
