    Dowa Integrated Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Program (DI-WASH Phase 3)

    United Purpose (UP) Malawi is an international non-governmental organisation working to create opportunities for lasting improvement in peoples’ lives. We work in partnership with others to support a range of livelihoods and food security, WASH and health, sustainable energy and gender equality programmes reaching over 1,000,000 people a year across Malawi. Globally, we work in nine countries across Africa, Asia and South America, however our Malawi programme is by far and away our largest and most established country programme. UP currently operates in 17 districts in Malawi, supporting 24 on-going projects, and a team of 180.

    Since 2012, we have distributed emergency food and cash assistance to over 1 million people making us one of the key emergency response players in the country. This includes reaching over 200,000 people after the devastating 2019 floods with immediate supplies, coordinating WASH in evacuation camps, and recovery support across nine districts and being one of the first responders in WASH during the COVID-19 outbreak in Malawi.

    UP Malawi is seeking to recruit a talented and dynamic team to start work 1st February 2021 for our Charity: Water funded WASH programme, called Dowa Integrated Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (DI-WASH). Since January 2019, UP has been implementing the first two phases of DI-WASH in Dowa District primarily targeting underserved communities in four TA’s in close collaboration with relevant Government line ministries’ and WASH actors. UP will be implementing phase 3 of the DI-WASH Program effective 1st January 2021. The goal of the program is to reduce morbidity and mortality of rural people of Dowa, especially under five children caused by WASH related diseases. The objective is to increase access to safe water and improved sanitation and hygiene practices in target communities and selected schools and ensure sustainable operation and maintenance of WASH facilities by beneficiaries in partnership with the district councils and private sector. The project is targeting population of over 55,000 people with an annual budget of $1,000,000.

    WASH Field Facilitator (4 positions, all based in Dowa – Mponela Office)

    Job Purpose:
    The WASH Field Facilitators will be responsible for ensuring that all project activities are properly planned and facilitated at community and household level in line with the project approach and principles. The role reports to the District Manager and supports MEAL Coordinator to develop and implement an effective M and E system

    Key duties and responsibilities:

    • Identification and sensitisation of relevant district, area and community based authorities and leaders.
    • Conducting training needs assessment for community based structures and facilitating the required trainings.
    • Facilitating formation/reactivation of community based Village Health & Water Committees.
    • Identify and verify, in conjunction with the project team, partners, beneficiaries to participate in the programme.
    • Work with communities to vision, design, prioritise and implement project initiatives, innovations and collective actions, through coordinating and liaising with other stakeholders.
    • Ensure implementation of project activities in line with UP’s safeguarding policy and procedures. This includes ensuring promotion of feedback channels to project participants and reporting concerns and feedback.
    • Facilitating coordination with government extension staff, decentralized structures and other local leadership.
    • Supporting establishment and implementation of WASH monitoring and evaluation methodologies including data collection
    • Ensure that all project interventions are carried out with full participation of the community and other stakeholders
    • Facilitate effective collaboration with other key development partners in the district to promote synergy and ensure best use of available resources for development activities within the district
    • Develop partnership with grass root level stakeholders for the sustainability of programmes
    • Carry out assessments and monitoring activities, as well as data collection Develop and submit weekly updates and monthly monitoring and documentation reports to District Manager
    • Support the integration of women’s empowerment and leadership; accountability; and UP mainstreaming issues (Environmental Management, Gender and Social Inclusion, Protection, HIV/AIDs, disability, etc) throughout all aspects of the project cycle.

    The successful candidate will have:

    • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree preferred in Public Health or Environmental Health, Community Development or other relevant subjects.
    • At least 3 years of practical experience in facilitating rural WASH activities or other development activities facilitation and reporting with a good understanding of participatory tools, gender, HIV and AIDS, environment, capacity building and human rights issues
    • Proven experience of/and commitment to participatory methodologies to development, especially CLTS, SLTS, PHAST and Sanitation Marketing
    • Demonstrable understanding of safeguarding risks and mitigating actions.
    • Good interpersonal, communication, facilitation and report writing skills.
    • Computer skills especially word processing, spreadsheets and internet
    • Proactive and highly motivated individual who requires the minimum of supervision
    • Strong respect and empathy for rural communities; a deep personal commitment to promoting women’s rights; as well as an affinity to UP’s mission and values of human respect, partnership and integrity
    • Valid Malawian motorcycle driving license and willingness to travel to the field on a motorbike.
