    Job Description

    Temporary employment on the position of Education Specialist –Reading and Disability

    Reading for All Malawi (REFAM) is a two-and half-year activity funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The activity aims to strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in the implementation of appropriate policies to guide the provision of effective instruction to learners with disabilities, improve the reading instruction of learners with disabilities from standards 1-4, and improve family and community support to learning for the learners. REFAM’s main goal is to develop a scalable intervention that allows for the screening, identification, placement, instruction, and testing of learners with disabilities in order to teach them to read. This will result in having learners with disabilities acquire the reading skills needed for success in primary school.

    Job summary

    The position is aimed at: providing political and education contextual, administrative and technical support for the award; representing REFAM in multiple high level meetings; supporting activity implementation and takes a supportive role in coordination among USAID and key stakeholders, especially MOEST, donors/partners, and DPOs in reading interventions; interacting with numerous MOEST and GOM senior-level officials; providing technical support and guidance to the project components leading to improved reading instruction and reporting; playing a major role in supporting MOEST personnel to the development of reading and teacher training materials; and co-leads capacity building efforts in teacher training and parent and community engagement.  The successful candidate will ensure close coordination and collaboration with the technical staff.


    Education and Experience

    • A Master’s degree in Education, Social Sciences or International Development
    • At least 5 years practical experience in project management
    • In-depth understanding and experience on issues of special and inclusive education
    • Strong knowledge on issues of Malawian sign language and Deaf education

    Knowledge, skills, Abilities and Aptitudes

    • Ability to work with minimal supervision
    • 5 years relevant experience in designing and implementing Inclusive Education projects
    • Good understanding of Disability, Deaf education and Malawian sign language issues
    • Team player
    • Good communication skills
    • Good computer skills
    • Willingness to work under pressure
