    United Purpose (UP) Malawi is an international non-governmental organisation working to create opportunities for lasting improvement in peoples’ lives. We work in partnership with others to support a range of livelihoods and food security, WASH and health, sustainable energy and gender equality programmes reaching over 1,000,000 people a year across Malawi. Globally, we work in nine countries across Africa, Asia and South America, however our Malawi programme is by far and away our largest and most established country programme. UP currently operates in 17 districts in Malawi, supporting 24 on-going projects, and a team of 180.

    Since 2012, we have distributed emergency food and cash assistance to over 1 million people making us one of the key emergency response players in the country. This includes reaching over 200,000 people after the devastating 2019 floods with immediate supplies, coordinating WASH in evacuation camps, and recovery support across nine districts and being one of the first responders in WASH during the COVID-19 outbreak in Malawi.

    UP Malawi is seeking to recruit a talented and dynamic team to start work 1st February 2021 for our Charity: Water funded WASH programme, called Dowa Integrated Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (DI-WASH). Since January 2019, UP has been implementing the first two phases of DI-WASH in Dowa District primarily targeting underserved communities in four TA’s in close collaboration with relevant Government line ministries’ and WASH actors. UP will be implementing phase 3 of the DI-WASH Program effective 1st January 2021. The goal of the program is to reduce morbidity and mortality of rural people of Dowa, especially under five children caused by WASH related diseases. The objective is to increase access to safe water and improved sanitation and hygiene practices in target communities and selected schools and ensure sustainable operation and maintenance of WASH facilities by beneficiaries in partnership with the district councils and private sector. The project is targeting population of over 55,000 people with an annual budget of $1,000,000.

    With funding from Charity Water and The One Foundation, United Purpose drilling will be sub contracted to drill boreholes in Dowa and Thyolo districts. United Purpose is revitalizing a self-sustaining operation, providing top quality and sustainable safe water to vulnerable households in target districts. UP is therefore looking for dynamic and entrepreneurial drilling team to take up the following vacant positions.

    Driver (3 x based in Dowa – Mponela Office)

    Job purpose:
    Reporting to the Project Engineer, the Driver is responsible for the timely, efficient and transparent
    accomplishment of all transport logistical support to the drilling team. S/he will be expected to assist during drilling and construction of new boreholes in accordance to GoM standards working closely with DIWASH staff in identifying potential drilling staff and ensure effective community mobilisation and engagement before and during drilling

    Key duties and responsibilities

    • Driving UP drilling and heavy machinery with care and responsibility
    • Ensuring safety and security of the vehicle when it is in his/her custody
    • Cleaning the vehicle on a daily basis
    • Ensuring that the engine and gear box oil, battery acid, break and clutch fluid and tire pressures are regularly checked and kept to recommended levels
    • Ensuring that the vehicle is regularly serviced and maintained
    • Recording vehicle log book continuously and accurately
      Timely reporting any vehicle accidents as and when they happen
    • Assist in conducting borehole siting and drilling of new boreholes in accordance to GoM standards
    • Assist in capturing digital records using mWater and keeps accurate drilling information
    • Assist in carrying out pumping tests on drilled water well
    • Reporting any damage/mechanical faults to the

    The successful candidate will have
    • Demonstrable understanding of safeguarding risks and mitigating actions.
    • High levels of integrity, honesty, strong ethics but also a quick learner
    • Minimum of a Malawi Schools Certificate of Education
    • Clean Driving License with 3 years driving experience, preferably class G
    • Defensive driving skills
    • Familiar with electronic gadgets and computers/internet
    • Highly organized and plans and implement his/her work efficiently, with very minimum supervision
    • Responsive to query in a timely manner
    • Ready to work at odd hours, including weekends and holidays
    • Excellent community mobilization and communication skills
