Job Description

The Norwegian Church Aid will, from October 2020, start implementing the Scaling Micro-Drip Irrigation Project in Chikwawa under “USAID Malawi Feed the Future Agriculture Diversification Activity (AgDiv).” The project’s main objective is to scale up smallholder investments into mini drip irrigation through direct purchasing by farmers, supported by extension services. This is in line with AgDiv’s mandate of fostering inclusive and sustainable growth in Malawi’s agriculture sector with positive impact on climate resilience, empowerment of women, the nutritional status of women and children, and market development. The project will target 1,248 smallholder farmers It is against this background that NCA would like to hire a team of six agronomists who will be based in Chikwawa during the project implementation period.

Position : Agronomist (6)
Station : Chikwawa
Reports to : Project Officer

Key Responsibility:
To promote the adoption of the incubator approach to scaling up of micro-drip irrigation in the project impact area.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Deliver a full season incubator programme to groups of 12-15 farmers
  • Selling of micro drip kits to the smallholder farmers
  • Conduct digital-based surveys at incubator site
  • Provide extension services to group of smallholders at the incubator sites
  • Mobilize potential incubator hosts in close collaboration with the Agriculture Extension Development Coordinators
  • Facilitate and establish input suppliers and off-takers linkages with smallholder farmer.

Education qualifications

  • Degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness Management, Agronomy, Irrigation Engineering or similar field required.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience with preferably focusing in the area of Agriculture Extension, Landscape Management and Restoration, Climate-Smart Agriculture.
  • Must have a clean Motorcycle License.
