Job Description

Mzuzu University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the the position of Project Accountant

Reporting to the Director of Finance and Investment, the project accountant will be responsible for all accounting for the University’s projects

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Effectively communicating with Project Managers (PM/Principal-in charge/Project Lead Investigator regarding contract documents and other related documents
  • Supervising project desk officers in finance
  • Helping faculties, Departments and cetres in preparation of project budgets
  • Supporting programmes /projects with budgeting, budget tracking and reporting to donors
  • Helping in preparation of internal and external audits assignments
  • Ensuring that all activities in any project are well billed for
  • Determining and following up the billed overhead required payments to the university
  • Following up with Treasury on any outstanding disbursements to the University under public sector investment programme funding
  • Preparing all tax returns for all running projects
  • Looking after project records and contracts to ensure terms are adhered to and
  • Any other reasonable duties as may be assigned by the University

Requisite Knowledge and Skills


  • Knowledge and hands on experience of projects accounting
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Good computer skills especially in respect of accounting packages
  • Good project management skills
  • Team player
  • Ability to work under pressure and at odd hours

Qualifications and Experience

  • At least a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • Those with CIMA, ACCA or masters degree in a relevant filled will have added advantage
  • Minimum of four (4) years of working experience in accounting filed at a senior level
